The world of freelancing can be daunting, especially if you are a beginner. Where do you start? How do you find clients? And once you have found them, how do you make sure you get paid?

In this post about freelancing for designers, we will answer all these questions and more. We will give you an overview of what freelancing for designers is, how to get started, and how to find suitable clients for your business.

By the end of this post, you will have a much better understanding of the world of freelancing and what it takes to succeed.

What is freelancing for designers?

Freelancing is the act of working for yourself instead of for an employer. Freelancers are self-employed people who often work remotely, although they can work in person if the client prefers. Most freelancers work in the fields of writing, design, web development, and programming.

The advantages of freelancing for designers are many, such as being able to set your own hours, work from home (or anywhere else) and choose your own clients.

However, there are also some disadvantages, such as having to find your own work and not having access to employer-sponsored health insurance or other benefits.

Starting freelancing for designers’ work

If you are interested in starting to work as a freelancer, there are a few things you need to do before you can start a real career. First, you need to develop a solid portfolio that showcases your skills and experience.

Your portfolio is essential to help you acquire clients; it is your chance to showcase your best work and demonstrate why someone should hire you over another freelancer.

How to find clients for your freelance business?

So, we have seen how an essential step is to have a good portfolio, which can be made up of some work done, or by putting together a portfolio of ‘fictitious’ work, i.e. work that has not really been commissioned by a client, but which is the result of work done on an invented brief, or from which we have taken inspiration.

Once a portfolio has been put together, the next step is to find clients. There are several ways to find new clients for your freelance business. Here are some examples that are widely used by professionals:

  • You can contact companies or individuals directly and ask about work (this is known as ‘outbound’).
  • You can create a profile on a freelance platform such as Upwork or Fiverr (this is known as ‘inbound’).
  • You can participate in networking events or join professional organizations related to your industry (this is known as ‘networking’).

Regardless of the method you choose, always make sure you do your best when approaching potential customers. Remember that your goal is to obtain long-term projects with satisfied customers, not one-off jobs with people who will never use your services again.

Once you have acquired your first clients and successfully completed a few projects, word of your freelance business will start to spread and more and more people will knock on your door to work with you and commission new projects.

This is known as “organic growth” and is the best way to grow your freelance business sustainably over time. Of course, acquiring your first clients can sometimes be the hardest part!

But don’t worry: if you follow the steps described above, you will be well on your way to success in your freelance career. If you want to learn more about this topic, I suggest you download our free guide: DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE GUIDE HERE.

How do I get paid as a freelancer?

The last question to be answered here is probably the most important: how do I make sure I get paid for my work?

If you work with individuals or small businesses that do not have established systems for invoicing and payments, it is up to you to create a system that works for both you and your client.

This might mean creating invoices in Google Docs or using a service like Freshbooks or Bonsai. In any case, be sure to agree on a payment plan before starting any project – that way there will be no surprises!
